Planning your bridal hair trial is one of the most exciting steps in bringing your wedding look to life. But did you know that what you do before the appointment can make the biggest difference?

As a bridal hair specialist, I’ve worked with hundreds of brides, and the smoothest, most successful trials all have one thing in common: a little preparation. With the right steps, you’ll walk into your appointment feeling confident, organised and ready to create a look you truly love.

Here’s everything you can do before your trial to make it absolutely perfect.

1. Start with Clean, Dry Hair

One of the biggest myths in bridal hair is that you need “dirty” hair for it to hold an updo.

This couldn’t be further from the truth. Freshly washed hair (ideally washed the night before or the morning of) is always best. It’s clean, manageable and gives me the perfect foundation to work with. And don’t worry about it being “too soft”. That’s exactly what professional products are for.

Plus… who wants dirty hair on their wedding day?

2. Bring Photos of Hairstyles You Love

Visuals are everything at a hair trial. Save photos of the styles you like, but make sure they’re shown on hair that’s a similar colour and texture to your own. The same updo looks completely

makeup on the day. Even just a simple “done up” version of your usual routine. It helps everything feel more cohesive and gives a far more accurate reflection of how the style will look on the wedding morning.

4. Wear White (Or Your Wedding Colour)

Your outfit affects how your hairstyle appears. Wearing white or a colour similar to your dress, ideally with a similar neckline, helps both of us visualise the final look. The shade and shape of your neckline influence how soft pieces frame your face, how high or low an updo looks, and how everything works together. It’s a small detail that makes a huge difference.

5. Bring Your Veil and Hair Accessories

Your hair trial is the perfect time to practice placing your veil and any accessories. Veils especially can affect the positioning of an updo. For example, if your veil needs to sit under a low bun, we may need to place the bun slightly higher so everything fits securely.

Bring along:

  • Your veil

  • Hair accessories (pins, combs, vines etc.)

  • The earrings you plan to wear

This ensures the finished style on your wedding day is perfectly tailored to your accessories not the other way around.

6. Book a Dress Fitting After Your Trial

If you can, schedule a dress fitting for the same day. Seeing your hair, makeup and dress together is magical and incredibly helpful. It shows you exactly how everything flows and whether anything needs tweaking before the big day.

7. Keep the Style In All Day

If possible, keep your trial hairstyle in for the rest of the day. I know you may not want your partner to see, but this is the best way to understand how the style feels. You might:

  • Love everything exactly as it is

  • Realise that one little piece at the front keeps getting pushed behind your ear

  • Decide you want it slightly softer, tighter or more secure

These tiny discoveries help us make the perfect adjustments so you feel comfortable and confident from morning to night.

Final Thoughts

Your bridal hair trial isn’t just about choosing a hairstyle. It’s about seeing your full bridal vision come to life. With a little preparation before your appointment, you’ll get the most out of your time, feel relaxed and walk away excited for your wedding morning.
